1) Why we should not buy leads

If you have ever bought leads before, where did you buy them from? Most likely, the leads are from lead generating companies. Perhaps, you have bought thousands of them. You think you will be able to recruit quite a number of people, only to be sorely disappointed.

Some of them didn’t even answer your phone call. Some of them answered your call, but were not interested to talk to you. Some of them are more patient. You spent one full hour talking to them…only to be rejected.

Why?

Because they are not targeted leads! These people may have opted in because they are interested in business opportunities. However, they may not be fresh leads. Perhaps, they have already been bombarded by many advertisements, why would they need one more from you?

Even if you are the first person to contact them, who are you anyway? Why did you contact me out of the blue? Did I give you the permission to contact me? I didn’t even expect you to contact me!

Fortunately, we can always generate our own leads. Let’s move on.

2) How to generate your own leads?

There are many ways to do it, but for the purpose of this article, we shall focus on online method. Basically, it can be done in a 3 steps process.

(i) Find out what your potential prospects are searching for.
(ii) Position yourself in front of them
(iii) Build a relationship with them

Let’s go through the first step.

(i) Find out what your potential prospects are searching for

You will need a keyword research tool here. Don’t worry, it’s free. Just go to Google, type in “Google External” or “Wordtracker”. You will be able to find two very powerful keyword research tools that you can use for free.

You may also want to consider buying more powerful tools like Keyword Elite, though I don’t think it is necessary, especially when you are just starting out and have a low budget.

What you want to do now is to perform some basic keyword research to find out what people are searching for. Since you want to generate your own leads, your potential prospects will include network marketers, people who are looking for business opportunities, people who want to make more money etc.

Next, you want to find out what they are searching for. You can just type in a generic keyword like “mlm opportunity” in the keyword tool. A list of keywords will then be generated. These are the keywords that your prospects are searching for.

(ii) Position yourself in front of them

After finding a list of keywords, you need to drive them to your lead capture page, also called a squeeze page. How do you do that?

You can write an article based on those keywords that you have found. Include a link to your website in your author resource box. Alternatively, you can set up a pay per click campaign using those keywords that you have found. I advise you not to use pay per click unless you know what you are doing. There are many people who “burned their wallets” through pay per click

Obviously, not everyone will opt-in to your squeeze page. You will need to give them an incentive to do so. For example, you can offer a free report. Make sure your free report is of high quality and is truly beneficial to your subscribers.

(iii) Build a relationship with them

People only do business with people they like and trust. Always under promise and over deliver. From time to time, you can give your subscribers free gift that will help them. Offer them valuable advice and only recommend products that are useful to your subscribers.
