President

members present
Secretary’s
report: (Submitted by Pat Cooper) Accepted with
corrections
Treasurer’s
report: (Sam Ketchum, Vice President, for Craig
Yarbrough) Accepted as read.
Committee
reports:
Membership: (Submitted by Helen Davis)
Total members: 266, includes 5 new members; 3 renewals
NewsGrass:
Distribution:
Fan will set up a sign for members to pick up newsletters at Saturday jams to
save postage.
Printing:
Bob Waters reported that the UT Print Shop will close in October. The UT Copy
Center will continue to copy our newsletter for us. Bob or Cheryl Parker will
deliver a final copy to the UT Copy Center, and Bob will collect the finished
product for subsequent Saturday distribution to members.
Mailing
costs: Mike Kisner reported on bulk mailing. Cheapest rate is nonprofit but
would have to be non-commercial with no ads. Mike recommended standard bulk mail;
advantages would be that we could advertise, pay same initial start-up fee and
yearly fee as for balk mail, and have no page limits. Presorting by zip code
will still be necessary.
Electronic NewsGrass: Bob revisited the proposal for an
electronic copy of NewsGrass. During the membership sign-up we should have a
check-off-box for members to indicate their willingness to receive an
electronic copy.
AD collection: Lonnie
has agreed to continue collecting for NewsGrass. A committee, headed by Lonnie
Gaither, will look into pricing of ads and report their findings and
recommendations at the September meeting. Lonnie reminded us that we should all
be sales people for MABA.
Web
Site:
ISP: Wayne Morris reported that we paid $60 for the web
site. ISP is decreasing their cost. A motion was made and passed that we
continue to remain with ISP.
Fall Picnic: Scheduled for Saturday
October 16th. Please bring food to share and instruments to jam-with.
Riverfest:
(John Gay) Riverfest will be held September 25th. Beginning at 10:00
am until 4:30 pm. Fifteen groups will play at the
festival on one of two stages. Informal jams will take place throughout the day
and all are encouraged to bring instruments. Cliff Butler and Beth Spence will
be in charge of a first aid station for this event.
We are trying to arrange television
promotion for this event; possibly from Channel 3.
John indicated that a portion of our
profits from the festival will go to the Bill Monroe Foundation.
John also asked for additional
volunteers to help with the festival; if available to help out, please see
John.
Larry Bomar made a motion
that MABA CDs be sold to raise money for the Bill Monroe Foundation. Motion passed.
Regulatory:
(James Johnson) No report at this time.
James
indicated that Bill Ellison complemented our newsletter on his radio program.
Education: (Cliff
Albright) Cliff conducted a successful beginning frailing/clawhammer banjo
workshop on July 17, 2004 at Lord of Life. A request for a finger style guitar
workshop was made by one of our members.
G.R.A.S.S. (Bonnie
Dumas) No report tonight.
Bob Turner requested to purchase 20
additional Kroger gift cards. Bob will have these cards available in the next
week.
Lucy Opry: Bob
Waters reported that Frank Ray and Cedar Hill put on a terrific show at the
Lucy Opry last Saturday night and encouraged members to support our sister
organization.
New Business:
Further discussion of
Riverfest and Fall Picnic (see above)
Requests
for donations from outside organizations. Short
discussion and unanimous agreement that our funds should be used to support
GRASS.
Meeting
Adjourned: 8:45 pm
